Every year May 31st is marked as the World No Tobacco Day. It was started by the World Health Organization to create awareness among the public about the harmful effects of consuming tobacco. Consuming tobacco has many harmful effects and has been linked to many health risks, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, and lung illnesses. The main focus was to raise awareness among people about the health risks associated with it. Smoking has many bad effects on mankind, society, and the environment.
Theme for 2024
The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2024 is to protect children from tobacco industry interference. The main target is to urge the government to take different measures to protect the young mass from tobacco and industry interference. We can protect young people and students by educating them about the harmful effects of smoking and consuming tobacco.
History
World No Tobacco Day was started by the World Health Organization in 1987; initially, it was called World No Smoking Day. The main focus was to raise awareness of smoking. And in 1988, the agenda shifted globally to make people understand the harmful effects of tobacco as well as the tactics used by industries to impress young people. And earlier, April 7th was observed as World No Tobacco Day, which coincided with the WHO anniversary, so in 1989, the day was changed to May 31st.
Importance:
Increase Awareness: The main motive of World No-Tobacco Day is to raise awareness among people about the harmful effects of such things as cancer, heart attacks, respiratory diseases, etc.
Encourage people to quit: To help or support people quit tobacco consumption in any form, may it be smoking or chewing, and make them aware of different programs run by the government or NGO that will help them quit tobacco.
Protect Children and Future Generation: The main priority of World No-Tobacco Day is to protect young children and future generations from tobacco and the tobacco industry.
Highlight Policies: To insist that the government implement steps to curb tobacco use, such as increasing the tax on tobacco’s products and introducing new policies for the use and sale of tobacco,.
